Dr Callum Fraser
Dr Callum Fraser is the Molecular Mycologist at Biohm. A self-driven and data-centred scientist, he designs and analyses experiments focused on the culture of fungi in various physical materials and applications. His work is driven by cutting-edge research and developments on the uses and impact of fungi in our material world. As the keeper of Biohm's strain library, he ensures the genetic stability of numerous microbial species, nurturing their growth and interactions.
Callum's workflows between scales, ranging from the millions of unseen molecular processes occurring in living organisms every second to the vast expanse of the cosmos. His exploration of how a specific pathogenic fungus, known for infecting wheat, orchestrates control of gene expression to enhance its own survival led to him being awarded a PhD in Fungal Epigenetics from Newcastle University. Leveraging next-generation sequencing and computational biology, his PhD uncovered novel DNA-linked tools and mechanisms that fungi may use to adapt to changing external stimuli. This theme of interplay between fungal genomes, cellular processes, and ecosystems continues to be central to his work.
Driven by his passion for advancing our understanding of nature and sharing this enthusiasm to others, he excelled in mentoring and guiding junior researchers during his time at Newcastle and Queen Mary University of London. As an experienced postdoctoral researcher, Callum continues to explore fungi in the lab, deepening his understanding of their intricate mechanisms for maintaining genome stability, which is integral to Biohm’s work.
Thinking at this biological scale requires a deep closeness with the natural world. Growing up in Dorset, where Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty intersect with the rugged Jurassic coastline, instilled in Callum a profound appreciation for the unique animals and plants that thrive there. His learning extends beyond the lab to include rigorous research and innovative experiments, as well as underwater exploration through diving, snorkelling, and studying intricate ecosystems. Additionally, Callum is a keen flautist and pianist and is currently learning to play the guitar.
