Mia Tiernan
Mia Tiernan is a Research and Development Assistant at Biohm, where she collaborates with interdisciplinary research teams to contribute to the development and implementation of innovative bio-based materials and technologies. She supports transdisciplinary research efforts spanning biology, chemistry, engineering, and design in order to advance the scaled use of regenerative biotechnologies.
Mia’s fascination with how humans occupy space, and the impact of materiality is deep-rooted and influences how she thinks about the natural world. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture & Spatial Practice) from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Design (Spatial) from Monash University. She has honed a practice in bio-design, working closely with mycelium and exhibiting in the 2022 Melbourne Design Week with a group of designers and architects.
Nature is at the core of every aspect of Mia's life. She is inspired by the endless intricate and interconnected systems of the natural world and aims to create materials that are in harmony with ecological systems.
If Mia was a non-human system, she would be an intricate mycelium network in a dense forest, connecting and nourishing all of the threads of life that sustain it.
