Dr Roberto Chiocchio
Dr Roberto Chiocchio is the Head of Process Innovation at Biohm. He works with the lifecycles and flows of various biological processes to develop and scale technologies that are sustainable and broad in impact. Roberto facilitates processes that make Biohm’s products and materials high performing and robust, and most importantly ensures that Biohm’s production processes can be translatable at scale.
He holds an Engineering Doctorate and MEng in Biochemical and Engineering from UCL. Here, Roberto researched how biological reactions can be used to convert agricultural waste into valuable co-products. He used a continuous reactor to improve scalability and ease of processing of the bioprocess. This work led to Roberto working within various fields of biotechnology to develop and adapt manufacturing processes that can be implemented efficiently and sustainably.
Roberto’s work is a hum of relations, forged between Biohm’s teams, external partners, non-human collaborators, and the wider world, where the wide-scale adaptation of Biohm’s technologies create the most impact.
Nature, to Roberto, is a web of interactions between everything found in the cosmos - from the largest exploding star to the atoms and charges involved in protein folding. The appreciation of every careful relation across space and time, rather than just as an isolated component, is instrumental in developing ideas and products that are attentive to the full life cycle of their becoming and their impact on the planet and people.
If Roberto was a non-human system, he would be the banks of a great river, experiencing the water's transformation over millennia through the seasons - from the still warmth of summer to the drizzly dampness of winter dusk. As a human, Roberto often immerses himself in the tranquil energy of nature and also enjoys exploring new urban spaces.
